A PROGRAM FOR FULL, FREE BREATHING


Low energy, inability to stay warm, and chronic anxiety are common symptoms related to breathing. These symptoms improve automatically with better, free breathing -- both free inhalation and free exhalation.

If you've been diagnosed as a "chest breather", have asthma, are an athlete who wants to improve breathing capacity and performance, or just can't get a full breath, this program is for you. You'll breathe more easily and fully by eliminating tension in the muscles of breathing.

Some people try to breathe more fully by inhaling harder; what they need to do, most often, is to relax the muscles of inhalation and exhale more completely. This situation is particularly true of people with asthma and emphysema.

Other people are stuck in exhalation following an episode of respiratory illness, such as pneumonia, that involves a long period of hard coughing. They need to relax the muscles of exhalation so they can inhale.

If you have spasmodic dysphonia, you may find the special track in the download version of the other program, Calmly Energizing (see, below), especially helpful for smoothing and deepening your voice.

Typical breathing exercises and momentary efforts to "breathe well" don't change automatic breathing patterns, and so produce minor improvements. To change automatic breathing movements, a training process is necessary that frees habitual restrictions to breathing.

Lessons address diaphragmatic breathing and rib movements of breathing, so that you breathe from the center of breathing, expanding more like a balloon, instead of artificially breathing into the chest or belly.

If you find full inhalation painful in your back, you probably have tight back muscles, in which case you need Quick Help for Back Pain.

If you have a "stitch" in your ribs, you may need a few private sessions with a Hanna somatic educator who uses clinical somatic education techniques to free breathing.
